This was to be done in the name of restoring academic rigour to Australian universities by denying Marxist lecturers the wherewithal to teach, for instance, the politics of lesbianism. He was spouting pure Santamaria: “Marxists realised that the universities now play a crucial role in the education of the elite of modern society, and they understand if they destroy the academic standards, and perhaps even the moral standards of that elite, well then they have perhaps fundamentally and fatally undermined liberal democratic society.”

His footy mates loved him. “Shut up, Abbo,” they’d say when he started talking politics. “Shut up, Abbo,” was a familiar, affectionate taunt on the field and in the pub.
